Luvox (fluvoxamine)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Luvox is indicated for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorders which interfere with social functioning. The mechanism of action appears to be related to the inhibition of serotonin uptake in neurons located in the brain.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: nausea (40%), headache (20%), weakness (14%), sleepiness (22%), insomnia (20%), dry mouth (14%), nervousness (12%), and dizziness and diarrhea (11%).

Drug Interactions

Luvox can produce an increase in the blood levels and toxicity of the following drugs: warfarin (Coumadin), theophylline, and propranolol (Inderal), phenytoin and cisapride. Luvox should be used with caution if when also taking tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline).

Cautions and Contraindications

Luvox is secreted in breast milk and may produce toxicity in the newborn.

Usual Dose

50 mg (1 tablet) at bedtime as a starting dose increasing to a maximum of 300 mg daily given in divided doses.
