Lopid (Gemfibrozil)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Lopid is a lipid regulating agent which decreases serum triglycerides and low density lipoproteins (LDL). Elevations of triglycerides and cholesterol are very probably involved in coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are gastrointestinal and consist of dyspepsia (heartburn) and abdominal pain.

Drug Interactions

When used with lovastatin (Mevacor) there is an increased risk of muscle damage (myopathy) and resultant kidney failure. In the event of unexplained muscle pains, contact your physician immediately. Lopid may add to the effect of Coumadin (warfarin) and frequent monitoring of coagulation parameters will be necessary if Lopid is added to preexisting anticoagulant therapy.

Cautions and Contraindications

Use with caution in presence of preexisting gall bladder disease.

Usual Dose

The usual dose is 1200 mg (2 tablets) taken 30 minutes prior to morning and evening meal.
