Lipitor (Atorvastatin)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Lipitor is used to reduce blood cholesterol levels. It does so by blocking a pathway (HMG-CoA) in the making of cholesterol. The reduction of cholesterol ranges from 15-25%. Lipitor also reduces triglyceride level in the blood by 20-30%.
Side Effects
The most common side effects which are seen in <2% of patients are: constipation, excess gas (flatulence), and heartburn. Rarely, a syndrome of muscle damage accompanied by pain may occur. Should this occur contact your physician immediately.
Drug Interactions
The risk of muscle damage increases if any of the following drugs are taken with Lipitor: cyclosporin, niacin (nicotinic acid), erythromycin, and certain oral antifungal agents. Those also taking digoxin may have an small but potentially significant increase in digoxin blood levels. The same may occur in those taking birth control meds containing norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol.
Cautions and Contraindications
Occasional liver damage has been reported with Lipitor. Liver function studies should be conducted prior to therapy and at 12 weeks. If no changes are noticed then every six months thereafter.
Usual Dose
The starting dose is 10 mg once daily with the dose range from 10-80 mg daily. For maximum effectiveness Lipitor should be taken in the evening.
