Lidoderm (Lidocaine 5%)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Lidoderm is indicated for the topical treatment of the pain associated with herpex zoster infections (post herpetic pain or shingles). It acts by providing local anesthesia to the portion of the nerve which is the origin of the pain. One patch provides effective analgesia for 24 hours. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic and not a narcotic or controlled drug.
Side Effects
The most common side effect is reddening or swelling of the skin immediately after application. This reaction is generally mild and transient.

Cautions and Contraindications
Do not use in those with a previous history of allergy to amide local anesthetics.
Usual Dose
Apply up to 3 patches a day, but only once for as long as 12 hours in a 24-hour period.
