Kemadrin (Procyclidine)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Kemadrin is indicated for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It is more effective in treating the rigidity than the tremor. It acts like the drug atropine which inhibits stimulation of smooth muscle and thus is an antispamotic.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: dry mouth, blurring of vision, lightheadedness, and constipation.

Drug Interactions

Use with any other medication which has similar pharmacology such as antihistamines (Benadryl and most cold preparations) and phenothiazine derivatives such as chlopomazine and haloperidol will increase the side effects of Kemadrin.

Cautions and Contraindications

Do not use in patients with narrow angle glaucoma or those with chronic constipation.

Usual Dose

2.5 mg three times a day. Increasing to a maximum of 10-20 mg daily.
