Indomethacin (Indocin)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Indomethacin is an anti-inflammatory drug which is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, gout, bursitis, andosteoarthritis. It acts in the body by inhibiting the synthesis of a group of compounds called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are a part of a cascade of factors leading to inflammation.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: gastrointestinal distress including nausea, heartburn, abdominal pain, and stomach bleeding. Should you notice your stools suddenly become darker in color please contact your physician immediately. Other side effects include headache (11%), dizziness, ringing in ears, edema, and a rash.

Drug Interactions

Diflunisal andprobenacid which increase the blood level of indomethacin and its side effects. Indomethacin may potentiate the effects of methotrexate, lithium and cyclosporin and increase side effects of those compounds. Occasionally, indomethacin may increase the blood levels and side effects of digoxin. Do not use with diuretic triamterene. Indomethacin may reduce the blood pressure lowering effects of beta-blockers and captopril.

Cautions and Contraindications

Asthmatics whose attacks are precipitated by aspirin should not take indomethacin. Do not take any other anti-inflammatory drugs in addition to indomethacin such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen.

Usual Dose

25 mg two-three times a day with meals or milk.
