Hyoscyamine (Levsin)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Hyoscyamine is an antispasmotic when taken either orally or under the tongue reduces gastric motility, gastrointestinal tone (spasms), bladder spasms and intestinal hypermotility which results in diarhhea. It acts by blocking the effects of acetylcholine, the body chemical which increases gastrointestinal and bladder tone and which in excess can produce spasms.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: dryness of the mouth, urinary retention, blurring of vision, and loss of taste. A rare but significant side effect is increased heart rate which, if it occurs to you, call your physician.
Drug Interactions
Drugs such as antihistamines, some antidepressants (Amitriptyline) and amantadine will increase the number and severity of side effects of hyoscyamine and should be avoided.
Cautions and Contraindications
Hyoscyamine should not be used in patients with urinary or gastric retention or uncontrolled narrow angle glaucoma.
Usual Dose
The usual dose is 0.125 mg every 4-6 hours as needed for spasms.
