Hydrocortisone Tablets

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Hydrocortisone tablets are used in patients with A relative deficiency off hydrocortisone production from the adrenal glands. This deficiency may be the result of chronic steroid use, Addison's disease or partial removal of the adrenal gland.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: fluid accumulation due to sodium retention, loss of potassium, muscle weakness, osteoporosis, slowed wound healing, cataracts, increased blood sugar and increased susceptibility to infections. A tendency towards emotional instability may be increased with hydrocortisone

Drug Interactions

Phenytoin, phenobarbital, and rifampin may increase the metabolism of hydrocortisone and require a dose increase if added to exsisting hydrocortisone therapy.

Cautions and Contraindications

Do not give live virus vaccines while on hydroocortisone. Hydrocortisone may allow for the reactivation of tuberculosis. Aspirin should be used with caution.

Usual Dose

20 to 240 mg each day with meals or milk.
