Hivid (Zalcitabine, ddC)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Hivid is an antiviral drug specifically approved for the treatment of infections due to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Hivid is used in combination with other anti-HIV viral drugs. It acts by preventing virus growth by preventing the production of viral RNA - a key step in viral reproduction. This drug must be taken with other antiretroviral drugs to prevent development of resistant strains.

Side Effects

The most clinically significant side effect is the development of peripheral neuropathy which will be noticed by a numbness and tingling in the arms and legs, numbness of the lips, muscle weakness, and occasionally lack of coordination. Cautions and Contraindications

A reduction in dose may be necessary in patients with impaired renal function.

Usual Dose

The usual dose is 0.75 mg three times a day. This may be reduced to 0.375 mg three times a day if the peripheral numbness becomes debilitating.
