Hepsera (Adefovir Dipivoxil)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Hepsera is indicated for the treatment of persistant histologically active chronic hepatitis B infections. It acts by inhibiting HBV viral replication by competing with the natural substrate deoxyadenosine triphosphate needed by the virus for reproduction. After Hepsera is incorporated into the viral DNA the virus can no longer divide and reproduce.
Side Effects
Weakness (13%), headache (9%). abdominal pain (9%), nausea (5%), abdominal discomfort and gas (4%).
Drug Interactions
None of the clinical significance reported.
Cautions and Contraindications
Discontinuation of Hepsera may result in an acute exacerbation of the hepatitis. Lactic acidosis with enlargement of the liver may occur on rare occasions.
Usual Dose
10mg (1 tablet) once a day.
