Haloperidol (Haldol)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Haloperidol is indicated for the management of behavioral problems, hyperactivity, and Tourette's disorder in both adults and children.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: dry mouth, blurring of vision, lightheadedness, and constipation. With higher doses extrapyramidal symptoms such as rigidity, muscle spasms, and uncontrollable movements may occur.

Drug Interactions

Use with extreme caution with concomitant lithium therapy. A sudden decrease in blood pressure and faintness may occur if also taking antihypertensive drugs with Haloperidol.

Cautions and Contraindications

Use with caution where there is a history of seizures.

Usual Dose

0.5 to 2.0 mg 2-3 times a day. If necessary, this dose may be increased 3-5 mg 2-3 times a day.
