Glyburide
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Glyburide is use for the treatment of Type 2 (Maturity-onset) diabetes. It acts by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas.
Side Effects
The incidence of side effects is very low <2% and consists mainly of a transient skin rash, blurred vision, gastrointestinal reactions such as nausea, feeling of stomach fullness, and heartburn.
Drug Interactions
When the following are added to glyburide therapy hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) may occur from a sudden increase in glyburide levels in the blood. salicylats including aspirin, sulfonamides, probenecid, and beta adrenergic blocking drugs such as propranolol and atenolol. Potentiation of glyburide effects may also occur if fluoroquinolone antibiotics such as Cipro and Levaquin.
Cautions and Contraindications
Not to be used in insulin dependent diabetes.
Usual Dose
1.25-20 mg daily given in one daily dose or in divided doses.
