Gemfibrozil

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Gemfibrozil is a drug which lowers serum triglycerides and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL). It acts by reducing the incorporation of fatty acids into newly formed triglycerides.

Side Effects

The most clinically significant side effects are: heartburn (dyspepsia), abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, and muscle pain. Should muscle pain occur please contact your physician. A higher incidence of gallstones may be associated with Gemfibrozil use.

Drug Interactions

Extreme caution should be followed if used with warfarin (Coumadin). Use with Mevacor, a cholesterol lowering drug, has been associated with muscle damage with an additional problem of renal failure possible.

Cautions and Contraindications

Use with caution in presence of gall bladder disease.

Usual Dose

The usual dose is 600 mg (one tablet) two times a day 30 minutes before the moning and evening meal.
