Furosemide (Lasix)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Furosemide is a drug which is used to treat excessive accumulation of fluid (edema) and high blood pressure. Furosemide stimulates urine production (diuresis) and in doing so reduces blood levels of sodium. This reduction in sodium is associated with a smaller blood volume and a lower blood pressure.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: weakness, rash, sun, sensitivity, dizziness upon standing up, and muscle spasms.

Drug Interactions

Because this medication can significantly affect the blood levels of lithium, the two should not be given together.

Cautions and Contraindications

Excessive loss of potassium can occur with a potential problem with heart rate if digoxin is also being used.

Usual Dose

10 - 40 mg each day in the morning. If approved by your physician, taking furosemide with orange juice in the morning will lessen the possibility of excessive lowering of blood potassium. If taking a potassium sparing drug along with furosemide such as triamterene, orange juice is not necessary.
