Fosamax (Alendronate)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Fosamax acts to slow down the progression of bone loss in postmenopausal women. It acts by inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts which are cells responsible for breakdown of bone.

Side Effects

The most common side effects (<5%) are: abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and flatulance. There may also be muscle pain and headache (<3%).

Cautions and Contraindications

Because Fosamax may be irritating to the upper gastrointestinal tract, use cautiously in patients with a history of gastritis, esophagitis, and gastric or duodenal ulcer disease.

Usual Dose

5-10 mg/day given with a full glass of water in the morning upon arising. You should not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking Fosamax.
