Famvir (Famciclovir)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Famvir is indicated for the treatment of virus infections due to herpes simplex and varicella zoster (shingles). It is converted in the body to peniclovir which, when incorporated into viral DNA, prevents viral replication.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are headache and nausea.

Usual Dose
Herpes zoster - 500 mg. every 8 hours for 7 days. Genital Herpes - 125 mg two times a day for 5 days.
Note
For genital herpes - begin therapy immediately at first sign of return of symptoms. If delay as much as 6 hrs after onset of symptoms, the effectiveness of supression therapy is compromised.
