Estropipate (Ogen)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Estropipate is an estrogen given by mouth for the treatment of mild to moderate symptoms associated with menopause. It may also be used to treat vaginal atrophy and to prevent osteoprosis in post menopausal women. Estrogens by binding to estrogen receptors on different cells act by regulating the transcription of genes responsible for female characteristics.

Side Effects

Side effects which may occur with estrogens in general are: headache, vaginal candidiasis, enlargement of the breast which may become painful, bloating, loss of scalp hair, and changes in libido. A patchy darkening of the skin known as melasma can also occur. This becomes more evident in the summer and fades very slowly upon discontinuation of the estrogen. It can be severe enough to require skin bleaching.

Drug Interactions

Antibiotics may alter gastrointestinal flora which recycle estrogens and result in a lower level of estrogen. This is of particular significance in for oral contraceptives which contain both an estrogen and progestin.

Cautions and Contraindications

The most significant is the presence of active thrombophlebitis or a history of the formation of blood clots.
