Enablex (Darifenacin)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Enablex is indicated for the treatment of overactive bladder producing symptoms of urgency, urinary incontinence, and increased urinary frequency. It acts by interfering with muscarinic receptors (anticholinergic activity) which results in relaxation of the bladder thus lessening the urge to urinate.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: constipation (21%), dry mouth (19%), headache (7%) and upset stomach (5%).
Drug Interactions
Ketoconazole may increase blood levels of Enablex and increase side effects. A potential interaction resulting in increased Enabelex blood levels may also exist with the following drugs: erythromycin derivatives, protease inhibitors for AIDS, nefazodone, and voriconazole. Use with caution with other drugs with similar anticholinergic side effects including tricyclic antidepressants, and antihistamines.
Cautions and Contraindications
Enablex should be use with caution in patients with urinary retention, narrow-angle glaucoma and decreased gastrointestinal motility.
Usual Dose
One tablet (7.5 mg) taken each day with or without food. The dose may be increased to 15 mg daily if necessary.
