Tetracyclines (Doxycycline, Minocycline, Sumycin)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Doxycycline is a member of the tetracycline family of antibiotics. These antibiotics act by preventing the growth of a number of sensitive species of bacteria (bacteriostatic). They are used to treat many types of infections primarily those produced by gram negative infections such as hemophilus influenza. It is also used in acne to reduce bacterial flora on the skin which reduces the number of pustules. In lower doses, doxycycline is also used to treat periodontal disease.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: loss of appetite, diarrhea, monilial infections of the mouth and anogenital region, photosensitivity requiring the use of sunscreens, rash, and an increase in blood urea nitrogen (a measure of kidney function).

Drug Interactions

se taking the anticoagulant Coumadin (warfarin) may require a lowered dose of the anticoagulant. Barbiturates such as phenobarbital, carbamazepine (Tegretol), and phenytoin (Dilantin) will decrease the blood level and effectiveness of doxycycline.

Cautions and Contraindications

Use with great caution in pregnancy and in nursing mothers!

Usual Dose

The usual dose is 100-500 mg each day in 1-2 doses. Do not take with antacids or bismuth preparations.
