Dostinex (Cabergoline)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Dostinex is indicated for the treatment of excess production of prolactin either due to idiopathic causes or to pituitary tumors. This tumor occurs mostly in women. It appears to be a more effective alternative to bromocryptine with a return to normal prolactin levels experienced by 77% of patients.

Side Effects

Side effects are rare with nausea (29%) being the most common.

Drug Interactions

Dostinex should not be used in those sensitive to ergot like derivatives.

Cautions and Contraindications

Use with caution in patients with difficulty controlling hypertension.

Usual Dose

0.5 mg two times a week.
