Dipyridamole (Persantin)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Dipyridamole is indicated as an adjunct to the anticoagulant warfarin in the prevention of postoperative clotting complications following cardiac valve replacement, It is used to prevent the formation of blood clots to prevent strokes heart attacks and other conditions characterized by the formation of blood clots. It acts by inhibiting the adhesion of platelets to each other, one of the initiating steps in the clotting process.
Side Effects
Dizziness (8%), abdominal distress (3.5%).
Drug Interactions
None reported. Because the mechanism of action is different from warfarin the two drugs may be used.
Cautions and Contraindications
This drug can produce blood vessel dilation and should be used with caution in those with low blood pressure.
Usual Dose
75-100 mg four times a day.
