Dihydrotachysterol (DHT)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Dihydrotachysterol is indicated for the treatment of idiopathic tetany (muscle spasms) and hypoparathyroidism. It is an analogue of Vitamin D. It increases blood calcium by stimulating the absorption of calcium from the intestine. and also mobilizes calcium from the bones.
Side Effects
Side effects are rare. In the event of an overdose symptoms of hypercalcemia may occur they are: weakness, headache, nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and disorientation.
Drug Interactions
Avoid the use of thiazide diuretics with dihydrotachysterol as the possibility of hypercalcemia is increased.
Cautions and Contraindications
Routine monitoring of blood calcium levels is required.
Usual Dose
0.8 to 2.4 mg daily.
