Dicyclomine (Bentyl)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Dicyclomine is indicated for the treatment of a variety of spastic stomach and intestinal tract disorders. Through its action as an anticholinergic drug, it acts by reducing and thus relieving spasms of the intestinal tract.
Side Effects
Common side effects include dry mouth (33%), dizziness (29%), blurred vision (27%), and nausea (14%). Men over 50 years of age who take this medication may have difficulty with urination.
Drug Interactions
Other drugs which may increase the actions and side effects of dicyclomine are: amantadine, quinidine, antihistamines such as Benadryl and Chloromycetin, and phenothiazines.
Cautions and Contraindications
Use with caution in patients with renal or liver disease, ulcerative colitis, hypertension, and irregular heart beats.
Usual Dose
The usual dose is 160 mg each day in divided doses.
