Deferiprone (Ferriprox)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Deferiprone is indicated for the treatment of excess iron in the blood. One condition which produces this is called thalassemia major. It is also seen occasionally following multiple transfusions and rapid destruction of red bloods cells.
Side Effects
The most serious side effect is a low white blood cell count. This could lead to susceptibility to infections so any occurance of flu-like symptoms should be reported to physician immediately. Joint pain and swelling may occur infrequently. Other less serious side effects include: abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and an increase in appetite.
Usual Dose
One tablet (500 mg) three times a day. If taken with meals the side effects of nausea may be reduced.
