Cytovene (Gancyclovir)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Cytovene is an antiviral drug which is specifically approved to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. It acts by inhibiting viral reproduction by inhibiting viral polymerase thus interfering with viral DNA synthesis.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: Fever (35%) and diarrhea (48%). The most significant side effects are: anemia (decreased red blood cells in blood), leukopenia (decreased white cells in blood). Your physician will follow your blood counts to be sure these side effects do not become severe.
Drug Interactions
If used with Videx (ddi), the Videx blood level can increase by as much as 2-fold and a dose adjustment downward of the Videx dose may be advisable. When use with zidovudine, there may be an increased adverse effect on the bone marrow (anemia and leukopenia). Concomitant use with probenecid will increase Cytovene blood levels by 50%.
Cautions and Contraindications
Do not use if neutrophil count is <500 cells/ul and platelet count < 25,000/ul.
Usual Dose
The usual dose is 1000 mg (2-500 mg) capsules three (3) times a day with food.
