Crixivan (Indinavir)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Crixivan is an antiviral drug specifically approved for the treatment of infections due to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It acts by inhibiting protease (a protease inhibitor), an enzyme required for release of new virus from cells in which it has been reproducing. Crixivan should never be used alone to treat HIV+ persons.
Side Effects
The most clinically significant side effect is the formation of kidney stones which occurs in approximately 5% of patients. To prevent this - patients should drink 1.5 liters of water or other fluids each day. Other side effects include: rash, pharyngitis, and changes in taste.
Drug Interactions
Rifampin should not be used in patients taking Crixivan. Rifabutin - A reduction of dose of rifabutin (>50%) and an increase (33%) in Crixivan will be required. Ketoconazole - a 50% reduction of Crixivan dose should be considered.

Usual Dose
The usual dose is 800 mg (2-400 mg) capsules three (3) times a day. This drug is not approved for pediatric use.
