Cosopt (Dorzolamide and Timolol)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Cosopt is a combination of two different medications which lower elevated intraocular pressure in the eye (glaucoma). One of the drugs (dorzolamide) inhibits an enzyme in the eye whic lowers the sodiun content of the ocular fluid and thus reduces fluid accumulation. The addition of timolol which also decreases aquous fluid formation in the eye further decreases intraocular pressure.

Side Effects

The side effects which are seen in up to 30% of those using this medication are: blurred vision, burning and stinging of the eyes, itching, and increased pigmentation of the iris. Another side effect noted is a change in taste perception (bitter, sour, or unusual taste).

Usual Dose

One drop in affected eye(s) two times a day. Administer at least 10 minutes before or after another eye drop.
