Compazine (Prochlorperabenzine)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Compazine is indicated for the management of mild anxiety or nausea and vomiting. If used for mild anxiety it should not be used for longer than 12 weeks in order to avoid persistent side effects. It acts as an antinauseant by depressing the area of the brain responsible for triggering nausea and vomiting.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: dry mouth, blurring of vision, lightheadedness, drowsiness, and constipation. With higher doses extrapyramidal symptoms such as rigidity, muscle spasms, and uncontrollable movements may occur.
Drug Interactions
Use with extreme caution with the concomitant lithium therapy. A sudden decrease in blood pressure and faintness may occur if also taking antihypertensive drugs with Compazine. Compazine may reduce the blood levels and effectiveness of oral anticoagulants such as warfarin and an upwards dose adjustment of warfarin may be necessary.
Cautions and Contraindications
Use with caution where there is a history of seizures or glaucoma.
Usual Dose
5-10 mg 3-4 times a day. Doses above 40 mg daily should be avoided.
