Combivent (Ipratropium and Albuterol)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Combivent is a product to be inhaled. It combines two drugs for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The first is ipratropium - it is an anticholiergic drug. It acts by antagonizing the action of acetylcholine, a naturally occurring bronchoconstrictor in the body. The other drug, albuterol, acts by stimulating the small airways to dilatethus counteracting the bronchoconstriction and airway obstruction characteristic of asthma.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: Headache (6%). The other side effects could also be related to the underlying condition and include: upper respiratory tract infection (11%), shortness of breath (5%) and coughing (4%).

Cautions and Contraindications

Combivent should not be used in individuals allergic to soybeans or peanuts.

Usual Dose

Two inhalations four times a day. Do not exceed inhalations in 24 hours.
