Clindamycin (Cleocin)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Clindamycin is an antibiotic which is used for the prevention and treatment of a variety of infections. It is of particular value in the treatment of anaerobic organisms such as bacteroides, a common bacteria found in the mouth.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are gastrointestinal and include abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. Occasionally, the diarrhea can become severe leading to a condition called pseudomembranous colitis. Thus your physician should be called immediately if diarrhea (not loose stools) should occur.

Drug Interactions

Because of potential antagonism, clindamycin should not be given with erythromycin.

Cautions and Contraindications

The diarrhea can be more sever in the very young and the elderly.

Usual Dose

150-300 mg every six hours. To avoid possible esophageal irritation, clindamycin should be taken with a full glass of water.
