Claritin (Loratidine)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Claritin is indicated in the symptomatic treatment of nasal and non-nasal symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and for the treatment of chronic idiopathicurticaria (rash with itching). It is an antihistamine which is a selective inhibitor of the histamine-1 receptor.

Side Effects

Side effects are rare - when they occur they are usually limited to nervousness, headache, drowsiness, wheezing, and weakness.

Usual Dose

Adults and children over 12 - 10 mg once daily.
