Cholestyramine (Questran)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Cholestyramine resin is indicated for the treatment of elevated total cholesterol and low density lipoproteins and symptoms associated with bile duct obstruction. It acts by binding cholesterol and lipids in the intestine thus preventing their absorption.

Side Effects

Constipation, abdominal discomfort, bloating, gas and indigestion.

Drug Interactions

Cholestyramine may bind other drugs when given together thus other medication should be taken 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after cholestyramine.

Usual Dose

As directed. The dose should be taken 30-60 minutes prior to meals dispersed in juice, soup or water (if flavored). Because cholestyramine can also bind fat soluble vitamins, supplemental vitamins should be used 1 hour before cholestyramine.
