Cardura (Doxazosin)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Cardura has two approved indications. The first is in the treatment of hypertension and the second, for the treatment of urinary outflow obstruction secondary to chronic benign prostatic hypertrophy. It acts by blocking the alphs-1 adrenergic receptors on the peripheral arterioles or prostate tissue. In either case there is a relaxation of the smooth muscles with the reduction of blood pressure and in the case of the prostate, increased urine flow.

Side Effects

The most dangerous side effect is a rapid fall of blood pressure upon standing. To avoid this problem, upon arising, dangle your legs over the edge of the bed for 30 sec - 1 minute before standing. Other side effects include: dizziness (20%), headache (14%), tiredness (12%) and drowsiness (5%).

Usual Dose

Initial dose is 1 mg taken once a day early in the morning or in the evening. The dose may be increased to a maximum of 16 mg daily to achieve maximum effect.
