Cafergot (Ergotamine and Caffeine)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Cafergot is indicated as therapy to prevent or abort vascular headaches such as migraines or histamine-induced cephalgia (headache).

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: numbness and tingling of the fingers and toes, muscle pains, leg weakness, nausea and localized itching.

Cautions and Contraindications

Cafergot should not be used in presence of peripheral vascular disease or coronary heart disease (angina).

Usual Dose

Take 2 tablets at start of attack and 1 additional tablet every half hour to a maximum of 6 tablets. DO NOT exceed 10 tablets/week! May be taken at bedtime as a short-term preventive measure.
