Buspar (Buspirone)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Buspar is indicated for the treatment of anxiety disorders or for the short term relief of anxiety. The mechanism of action is unknown but it may act through a modulation effect on brain serotonin receptors.
Side Effects
Side effects are relatively mild and include dizziness (12%), drowsiness (10%) and nausea (8%).
Drug Interactions
Buspar should not be used with MAO inhibitors such as Nardil. Buspar may increase the blood levels of haloperidol. Erythromycin and itraconazole (Nizoral) will increase the blood levels and side effects of Buspar.

Usual Dose
Initially - 15 mg daily in two divided doses to a maximum of 60 mg/day.
