Benicar and Benicar HCT (Olmesartan with or without Hydrochloethiazide)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Benicar and Benicar HCT are indicated for the treatment of hypertension. Benicar itself acts to prevent the formation of angiotensin II, a vasoconstrictor produced in the body. Hydrochlorthiazide (HCTZ) promotes the excretion of sodium and with it, excess water. The net result is a reduction of blood volume and a subsequent reduction of blood pressure.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are dizziness (9%), upper respiratory tract infections (7%), and nausea (3%).
Drug Interactions
There are no known interactions with olmesartan. Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs may decrease the effectiveness of HCTZ. Patients taking HCTZ should not be given lithium.
Cautions and Contraindications
Diuretics of the class to which HCTZ belongs may cause blood electrolyte abnormalities thus intermittent blood testing for such changes is recommended. Occasionally HCTZ may increase blood glucose levels.
Usual Dose
Olmesartan 20-40 mg each day.
