Baycol (Cerivastatin)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Baycol is used to reduce blood cholesterol levels. It does so by blocking a pathway (HMG-CoA) in the making of cholesterol. The reduction of cholesterol ranges from 15-25%.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: rash, headache, and heartburn. There was a small but statistically significant increase in the incidence of flu-like syptoms in patients taking Baycol.

Drug Interactions

Cholestyramine - although the use of the two drugs will reduce cholesterol significantly more than either drug alone - if used together, Baycol should be take either one hour before or four hours after cholestyramine to assure adequate absorption. Concurrent treatment with gemfibrozil may increase the possibility of muscle breakdown with subsequent renal damage.

Cautions and Contraindications

Use with caution in women of child-bearing age.

Usual Dose

The starting dose is 0.4 mg once daily in the evening. The dose range is 0.2-0.8 mg daily.
