Avodart (Dutasteride)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Lilly - Avodart is the second drug of its class to treat the symptoms of prostatic hypertrophy. It produces a reduction in prostate volume, an improvement in symptoms of urinary retention and hestancy and a reduction in the need for BPH-related surgery. It acts to inhibit the action of the 5-alpha reductase, a necessary step in the production of testosterone.
Side Effects
Mild with the most common being impotence (4.7%), decreased libido (3%), breast tenderness (0.5%) and ejaculation disorders (1.4%).

None reported.
Cautions and Contraindications
Not to be used in women or children. Men taking Avodart should not donate blood for at least 6 months after stopping the drug.
Usual Dose
One tablet (0.5mg) once daily.
