Avandia (Rosiglitazone)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Avandia is indicated as monotherapy for the treatment of maturity onset (Type 2) diabetes. Avandia acts by improving the sensitivity of cells to the effect of circulating insulin on liver, muscle and fat cells. It is of particular value in overcoming the insulin resistance characteristic of Type 2 diabetes. Avandia is the second drug in this class of agents. The first, Rezulin, has been associated with the occurance of severe liver damage.

Among the more common side effects are: headache, edema (swelling of ankles) due to increased volume of blood, and anemia (decreased red blood cells). Although significant liver damage has not been reported with Avandia, liver function studies should be performed every 2 months for the first year of therapy.
