Atrovent (Ipratropium) for Inhalation
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Atrovent is used to prevent the bronchospasm which produces clinical asthma. It acts by antagonizing the effects of acetylcholine, a naturally produced biochemical which increases the tone of bronchial muscle in the airways. This medication should be used along with other medication for the bronchospasm associated with asthmas as its effects are delayed and it is more effective to prevent asthmatic attacks than to treat an acute episode.
