Arthrotec (Diclofenac plus Misoprostol)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Arthrotec contains a combination of two drugs and is indicated for the treatment of arthritis. Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) which interferes with the inflammatory process by blocking the production of prostaglandins. Misoprostol is a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin. A depletion of prostaglandin in the stomach is believed to be responsible for the development of stomach irritation and bleeding observed with many NSAIDS. Thus this combination provides antiinflammatory activity of a NSAID with a lower incidence of gastrointestinal irritation and bleeding.
Side Effects
The most common is abdominal pain (15%), diarrhea (11%), heartburn (11%), nausea (6%) and flatulence (4%). Occasionally fluid retention with peripheral edema may occur.
