Aricept (Donepezil)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Aricept is believed to exert its effect by enhancing cholinergic brain activity, a property believed deficient in Alzheimer’s disease. This medication slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease but does not alther the underlying course.
Side Effects
Nausea (19%), diarrhea (15%), insomnia (14%) fatigue (8%). These side effects can be reduced by a titration to 10 mg/day over a six week period.
Drug Interactions
If surgery is required - a much lower dose of succinylcholine-like skeletal muscle relaxants will be necessary.
Cautions and Contraindications
Caution should be used in presence of bradycardia (slow heart rate) and history of gastric ulcer disease.
Usual Dose
The usual dose is 5 to 10 mg/day. A starting dose of 5 mg/day for 4-6 weeks is recommended before increasing to 10 mg/day.
