Arava (Leflunomide)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Arava is a drug which inhibits a step in the inflammation process. It is approved for use in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: diarrhea, headache, and a rash. Alopecia (loss of hair) has occurred in 10% of patients taking Arava. An increase in liver enzymes may occur thus monitoring of liver enzymes for the first few months of therapy is suggested.
Drug Interactions
Use with caution in other drugs known to affect liver function e.g. methotrexate. Use with rifampoin may result in increased Arava blood levels and toxicity.
Cautions and Contraindications
Women of childbearing age who are considering pregnancy.
Usual Dose
One tablet each day.
