Antabuse (Disulfiram)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Antabuse is used as an adjunct in the treatment of alcohol abuse. It blocks the metabolism of alcohol so that the injestion of ethyl alcohol produces a metabolite which produces an unpleasant reaction such as flushing, throbbing headache, respiratory difficulty, sweating, and increased heart rate.

Side Effects

Transient drowsiness, fatigue, a metallic taste, and allergic dermititis may be seen on occasion. The skin reaction can be controlled by taking an oral antihistamine. This medication can be toxic to the liver and periodic liver function tests are suggested.

Drug Interactions

Antabuse may decrease the metabolism of other drugs and result in increasing their blood levels and side effects.

Cautions and Contraindications

Patient also taking oral nitroglycerin products may experience a significant reduction in blood pressure and thus in those circumstances, Viagra should by used with GREAT caution. This medication should also be used with extreme caution in men with a history of heart disease or hypertension.

Usual Dose

One tablet (250 mg) daily, not to exceed 500 mg daily
