Ancobon (Flucytosine)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Ancobon is an antifungal antibiotic which is indicated for the treatment of infections due to Candida and Cryptococcus. Once it enters the fungal cell it is metabolized to 5-fluoracil which inhibits the synthesis of both DNA and RNA. DNA and RNA synthesis are required for cell division and growth.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry mouth, itching with or without a rash, dizziness, headache, hearing loss, and weakness.
Drug Interactions
Cytosine arabinoside will inactivate the antifungal activity of Ancobon. Use with amphothericin B will potentiate the antifungal effects of Ancobon.
Cautions and Contraindications
Ancobon should be used with extreme caution in patients with impaired kidney function.
Usual Dose
50 to 150 mg/kg/day given in divided doses at 6 hour intervals. Nausea can be reduced if the capsules are given a few at a time over a 15 minute period.
