Aldara (Imiquimod)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Aldara is a topical cream which is used to treat genital and perianal warts. The mechanism of action is unknown. A clearance of lesion success rate of 60% has been reported with adherance to the dose regimen critical.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: redness on site of application (common), erosion of site, flaking of skin, and swelling. These reactions are less common with three time daily applications than with daily. With three times weekly applications, only 1.2 % of patients had to discontinue therapy.

Usual Dose

Apply in thin layer, rubbing gently in skin until cream is no longer visible. Apply three times weekly prior to normal sleeping hours and leave on skin for 6-10 hours. At end of this time, wash the area with soap and water. Continue treatment ntil area is completely clear or for a maximum of 16 weeks. Wash hands before and after use of cream.
