Aldactone (Spironolactone)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Aldactone is an inhibitor of aldosterone. This inhibition results in an increased excretion of sodium in the urine and retention of potassium in the blood. This increased excretion of sodium not only increases urine production but also lowers blood pressure.
Side Effects
The most common side effect is enlargement of the breasts, an effect only of adverse significance in men. Other side effects include abdominal cramping and diarrhea, headache, and tiredness.
Drug Interactions
Do not use in conjunction with other potassium retaining diuretics such as ACE inhibitors (consult your physician to see if you are taking any of those) and indomethacin. Use with digoxin may increase digoxin activity by 50% thus suggesting a downward revision in digoxin dose when the two drugs are used together.
Cautions and Contraindications
Do not take any potassium supplements.
Usual Dose
25-200 mg daily in divided doses.
