Akineton (Biperiden)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Akineton is indicated for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It acts by enhancing antichlinergic activity in the brain. This antagonism of acetylcholine at receptors in the brain controlling movement restores the balance and improves the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
Side Effects
Atropine-like side effects such as dry mouth, blurring of vision, constipation and urinary retention (particularly in men) are common.
Drug Interactions
Use with caution with other anticholinergic drugs such as antihistamines, antidepressants and phenothiazine (Thoarazine) derivatives.
Cautions and Contraindications
Contraindicated in narrow angle glaucoma, significant urinary obstruction or bowel obstruction.
Usual Dose
One tablet 1-3 times a day.
