Agrylin (Anagrelide)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Agrylin is used to reduce total platelet count. Thus, it is used to treat primary essential thrombocythemia, a condition where there are too many platelets. The symptoms of this condition, headache, dizziness, and visual symptoms are significantly improved with this drug. The mechanism of action is unknown.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: headache, diarrhea, weakness, edema (accumulation of fluid in ankles and legs), irregular heart rate and abdominal pain. The incidence of side effects increases with increasing dose.

Usual Dose

Starting dose - 0.5 mg four times a day. Maintenance - adjusted based on platelet count usually 1.5 to 3.0 mg a day in divided doses - not to exceed 10 mg/day.
