Actigall (Ursodiol)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Actigall is used to both to treat and prevent the development of cholesterol gallstones. Actigall acts by reducing the synthesis of cholesterol by the liver thus reducing its secretion via the bile duct. It also inhibits the absorption of cholesterol from the intestine.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: diarrhea and dyspepsia (heartburn). Other side effects were no more common than a placebo (dummy) pill.

Drug Interactions

Aluminum antacids, cholestyramine resin, and colestipol will interfere with the absorption of Actigall. Estrogens and oral contraceptives increase the bile secretion of cholesterol and may counteract the effects of Actigall.

Usual Dose

8-10mg/kg/day in 2-3 divided doses. The recommended dose for prevention is 300 mg (1 capsule) three times a day.
